Sieved lactose for pulmonary and nasal drug delivery

MEGGLE has it.
The right sieved lactose for dry powder inhalation

Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are widely used in pulmonary drug delivery

Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI)are enjoying still an increasing popularity. This is due to their advantages, such as ease of use, small size, portability, and the lack of requirement of breath actuation coordination. Because they are propellant-free, they are environmentally friendly. Furthermore, as solid-particle formulations they are comparatively stable. Usually, this dosage form contains a device, one or more APIs and an excipient that improves the powder qualities of the formulation. Features such as particle size are fundamental factors in the design of DPIs.

Most DPI formulations employ a carrier excipient to provide bulk and flow. The most common carrier used is lactose which can make up to 99 % of the formulation. It has been shown that the particle size distribution of the carrier crystals highly influence the performance of the formulation and different API-device combination require different carrier characteristics. Therefore, sieved Inhalac® is available in a broad spectrum of different particle size distribution and contents of intrinsic fines.

InhaLac®: A broad spectrum of particle size distribution

MEGGLE provides a broad spectrum of sieved inhaler lactose grades. The portfolio includes a variety of products, ranging from the coarse InhaLac® 70 with a x50 of around 215 µm to the fine InhaLac® 251 with a x50 around 50 µm. Moreover, customizing the particle size distribution is possible to optimize you formulation.

Important: Full compliance with regularly bodies

MEGGLE’s InhaLac® grades comply with the current harmonized USP-NF, Ph. Eur. and JP monographs. In order to meet the special requirements for pulmonary drug delivery, additional and in some cases even stricter specification limits are in place for all InhaLac® grades. These exceed even those currently required by the pharmacopoeias.

MEGGLE´s sieved lactose grades for DPI are available under the trade names

InhaLac® 70, InhaLac® 120, InhaLac® 160, InhaLac® 230 and InhaLac® 251
